Sneaking through the Snowdrops

I know time goes faster as you get older, but how are we mid-February already?

Long time readers will know that Valentine's is not the most special part of February; Missy's adoptiversary is the most important day of the month! This year marks 11 years that Missy has been part of the family and that number does not fail to shock me every time I see it. She's 12 now, how did that happen?

We celebrated early this year owing to schedules. Like the queen, Missy had two events, one as a photoshoot in her new jumper with the most delightful "cake" (sugar and dairy free waffles with dog friendly chocolates on it) and then again last weekend where we did a nice walk and she was spoiled with her favourite "dead things".

The cake did not last long.

The weekend before last, we managed a trip to the circus with my mum (always a good day out) followed by a really chill Sunday with lots of snuggles for Missy.

And this weekend we managed a quick trip up north to the in laws for a quiet recharge and a play in their campervan - after many years, they have decided we can be trusted to take it for a wee holiday. First of all though we had to camp on the drive, just to be shown everything, all the buttons and dials and trays and hidden compartments (I did not appreciate how much storage their actually was!) Next step is for us to join them at a site (we'll camp) but to be shown how it's set up and how to cook etc in it.

I feel some of these steps are to encourage us to see them more, but it's always a really chill visit seeing them, so I don't mind!

Missy has been removed from the set up team though, after this attempt of tidying up! I think she's best lounging about as foreman and queen than continuing to "help".

One can't forget Ruby who, after her initial excitement, proved she remembered her manners and was very well behaved. Missy has a sore ear at the moment, and her dislike of the winter cold has made her less willing to put up with nonsense from other dogs than usual! We are all very eagerly awaiting spring.

Perhaps we will see a mythical "doggit"!

We have some exciting things lined up for the next update, will see you then!

Up and Down the Country

A very, very quick post as its been a bit of an all-over-the-place kinda week. For the bulk of it, I've was down in Birmingham for a work conference. Owing to train strikes, my team drove, which was pretty horrendous as six hours is a very, very long time when your tired and in the car.

Whilst there, I was also partaking in a poster competition where I had to present about a project I'd been involved in for 10 minutes, including a Q&A. I placed third, so was very pleased with my podium finish! Although I was not so pleased about being called up on stage to receive my certificate - I'll always prefer the comfort of the shadows to the limelight!

It was a very late finish by the time I got home Thursday. My sister was there along with my hubby to congratulate me. We had organised a sneaky crafts weekend with hubby's parents long before I knew I was going to be at the conference, so the quick turn around was not something we had planned for!

Hubby had a half day at work, so Missy and I were treated to pancakes out before my sister broke her wool ban and visited hobby craft. It was only three balls, so I think she can be forgiven!
Then it was time to get up the road. Missy enjoyed having company in the back and we all chatted and caught up with life on the journey.

The main focus for the crafting was resin. So Saturday morning was spent mixing colours and hoping for the best as we poured the goop into various moulds. We then managed a nice afternoon dog walk before going out to see Disney on Ice. You really couldn't have asked for a nicer day!

It was an early start back today. Partly because my house hasn't been properly tidied since before I left for Birmingham, and secondly, my sister was doing the double journey and going home to Manchester. At time of writing, she's still driving home, and I don't envy her in the slightest for such a long journey.

Overall a great wee weekend! Just a pity I could do with a few more days to finish recovering from the week!

Powering Through the Weekend

This weekend had an unexpected bonus adventure - the Castle Fraser Steam and Vintage Fair!

So let's rewind a bit. A few months ago, hubby's Dad finally went to a doctor about his bellybutton which had popped out into a little bump (I am positive that this is where hubby has this bad habit from, his arm could be hanging on by a thread and he'd insist he was fine). Of course, to no one's surprise, FIL had an umbilical hernia and he went on a waiting list to get it sorted.

Fast forward to about 10 days, and he was in surgery and successfully had it fixed. Which meant he had to basically be on bed rest for the foreseeable. Which would be fine, if thier dog Ruby, wasn't at least 50% Tigger.

Y'all, this dog has springs for paws. Nonetheless, MIL (who has a gammy knee) stepped up and has done all of the dog walks as well as looking after her husband. We had said since we knew an operation was going to happen that we would come up and help out with Ruby. We knew that it was the best place to help out so that MIL could have a break and get on with some well deserved reading or a nap or two.

So we arrived and got to work by handing over a get well soon crumble. Saturday we had planned a succession of walks. The Moss. Castle Fraser. BA Field. Maybe the Estate for an evening walk too.
Also like his father, this is where hubby, and subsequently myself, gets naming walking routes from.

The Moss, check. A spot of brunch (aka the get well soon crumble which sadly went all too soon). Now onto Castle Fraser.
We got the dogs in the car and pottered down the road.
At the entrance was a big sign that said "Steam and Vintage Fair".
"Oh", I said to hubby, "We must tell your dad they're having an event soon."
We pulled in and were met by dozens of men in bright coats waving us into the overflow caepaek.
"Oh", I said to the car in general, "it's today!"
We rang MIL whilst we got expertly taken to out parking space.
"Oh!" FIL could be heard in the background, "I'd forgotten that was on!".

No, no, there was to be no adventure. We would stick to the plan and be in hand at the house.

So. Um. Yeah.

Really, it was an elaborate excuse to work on Ruby's posing.

Realistically, we did the 30 minute yellow walk and caved. What better way to wear a dog out than new sights, sounds and experiences? Missy is an old hand at this, she'd keep Ruby right and show her there was nothing to be worried about. And, apart from deciding that she deserved a biscuit every time Missy did, regardless of whether she posed it not, Ruby did brilliantly. She was definitely unsure at the start - this is the second event she's done (last year's DogFest being the first), but between hubby's calm demeanour and Missys laid back attitude to the noise and smells, Ruby quickly settled in for it.

We really tried hard with the posing. And she was starting to get the hang if it at the end (although hubby is politely out if shot for them all!)

We were spoilt for choice. Vintage cars and tractors. Tiny steam engines to giant steam traction engines and rollers. Motorbikes, fire trucks and military vehicles. Honestly, there was something for everyone.
A very unexpected and delightful adventure.

We sheepishly returned to the in laws and handed over the exhausted dog. They were delighted we had decided to stay and have a nice day, MIL was pleased to have got the hoovering done and also catch up on her book and emails whilst FIL had a good nap.
A good day all round then!
And yes, Ruby did wake up an hour or two later and we took her out again, but she was definitely more chilled out after an adventure of her own.

Mission accomplished.

We gave both dogs a good walk this morning before setting off. FIL is now at the point of his recovery where he is to start walking about, so will be able to start on some of the smaller dog walks, so our visit was perfectly timed in thar Ruby will be calmer for them moving into the routine.

Not a bad little weekend! There is something to be said for a spontaneous adventure!

Accidents in Aberdeen

Well, plans have rather gone awry this weekend. We'd decided to have a wee trip up to Aberdeen to see the in-laws before hubby started his new job on Monday, there was talk on playing with resin (MIL is very into crafts like myself), walks at some nice castles and generally eating far too much food and drinking more tea than is really good for you. Well, that last part is just a natural state of being for me these days!
*sips tea*
So we arrived Thursday, a bit later than usual as I was working during the day, and we decided that, after a quick cup of tea, we'd take the dogs to the playing field and let Ruby burn off some steam.

That was fine. She was charging after her Frisbee, having fun, Missy was just chilling out and watching and all was going well. Then hubby decided to play piggy in the middle with Ruby, his dad threw the Frisbee, hubby (miraculously, I won't lie) caught it a microsecond before he was ploughed into by Ruby.
And he went down like a sack of potatoes.
There was beat of laughter and then a beat of silence before we realised he wasn't getting up again. Less than an hour into our mini break and my hubby had managed to break himself.
Got him to limp back, elevated it, got the ice out and the painkillers. Fingers crossed he'd wake up bruised but fine in the morning.

Nope. Still sore. Hobbling badly. Got him to stay in bed whilst I did the dog walk and then played with the resin. After lunch, still no improvement.
He insisted it was fine.
After dinner, he conceded defeat and let me ring NHS24. After a phone consultation there was a video consultation. Then he was booked into the minor injuries clinic for an in person appointment the next day.

In the end it was an overstretched ligament. So he's to rest it for 3 days and should be fine for a work (which is going to be all induction stuff and paperwork).
We decided just to head back home and take today as an easy day about the house, you heal better in your own space. Hubby already feels much better, so thankfully he's on the mend.

So much for our quiet weekend away!

Adventure is out there!

So Missy got some very exciting news at the end of last week:

She's officially an Explorer for DogFuriendly.com! What does that mean? She gets to share her adventures on a bigger platform and we can spread the word of all the awesome dog friendly places we have been to and think you should go to too. I was really impressed with the selection process that had us fill in an online application form and then, after being shortlisted, write a listing for the site. For once the dogs are being chosen because they will do well in the role, not because of Pedigree.

So, with that in mind, I'm hoping it will refocus the blog which has become a bit of a place for my meandering thoughts and commentary on life.

This weekend was a flying visit up north to visit the in-laws. I'm not sure if it's a man thing, or if my close proximity to my mother somewhat negates the desire, but sometimes all my hubby wants to do is go back home to his old nest and be pampered a little. I certainly agree it's nice to relax and not be guilt tripped by laundry needing washed or paperwork needing filing, so we happily packed the car and made the journey.

My in-laws certainly enjoy us visiting and they take being grand-paw-rents seriously having already organised the weekend dog walk intinery. It wasn't just for Missys benefit, Ruby, now 8 months old, is at the terrible twos stage, and will steal shoes and hats out of sheer petulance if she doesn't feel she's getting enough attention. I think they appreciated a bit of a break as we played with the puppy and Missy snuggled with them on the sofa!

We started our new role as Explorers with a revisit to Crathes Castle. It's a National Trust site and, whilst dogs are not permitted into the buildings, they are more than rewarded with a beautiful woodland walk. The worst of the boggy areas have boardwalks, but it's not the easiest terrain underfoot - which is exactly what Missy likes best! Both she and Ruby tore around, noses to ground, looking for rabbits and mice and thoroughly exhausted themselves.
For the humans, they have just erected wooden carvings of native animals; we found an otter, a squirrel, a kingfisher and a beautiful heron dotted about the route.
We finished with hot chocolate and cakes from the cafe which we discovered was dog friendly. We stayed out in the courtyard though, both In-laws didn't feel Ruby could be trusted yet in a nice indoor space. Perhaps next time.
We celebrated Burns that evening with a truly Scottish dish: fish suppers and mushy peas! Forget haggis, we went for the real deal, at least by 21st Century standards.

My MIL loves crafts so we managed to fit some time in to get on with that. I haven't quite finished the piece I started, but will hopefully have the embellishments finished soon. I did however get the chance to show her what I had done with an Xmas present she had gotten me:

An art form in progress for sure, but I was pleased with how these turned out - they are a mix of soy and Beeswax, hence the creamy colour.

Well, I will leave things there for now, Missy is snoring away and those jobs I put aside for the weekend won't wait any longer. No rest for the wicked!

Crathes Castle

It was a last minute change of plans this weekend! The hubby managed to wrangle a long weekend at the last minute and so we decided to go see his mother for her birthday in Aberdeenshire and to get a well deserved break from the rat race (you know you are getting old when you look forward to bad phone reception!)

I had the dentist first thing Saturday, so we had brunch and headed straight up in the car. The weather has turned and, due to an overnight frost (the neighbouring towns had had snow the day previously) it was cold and we decided to warm up in front of the fire.
For those following my garden exploits, yes. The frost wiped out a third of the pumpkins. Thankfully I have spare in the cold frame I was saving for a seedling sale at work, so those will be staying with me!

We had a nice walk about the fields and Missy was happy to watch and not chase the deer we saw. The bunnies were free game, but it was certainly rodents 5 and Missy nil by the end of the walk.

Sunday we offered to help next door who, on top of just having a baby, has ended up looking after her brothers dog in addition to her own. Missy has a Romeo and Juliet-esque relationship with Duke, the dog next door, and was unimpressed that his equally hairy cousin dog had come to visit. Duke is a who-knows-what that looks like a hairy carpet on legs and Pickles is a wire haired German pointer. They make a great pair running wild and boisterously playing, but Missy dislikes being outnumbered and waited till the end of the walk when they had calmed down somewhat to play.

The afternoon dog walk was a drive down to Crathes Castle, a National Trust site that, whilst dogs are not permitted in the castle or main garden, are allowed in the surrounding woodland. The sun had come out and the wind dropped and we enjoyed something close to pleasant as we followed the trail and admired the many dogs we met. We were lucky enough to come across a flyball competition and decided to watch a few races. Missy was unhappy with the set up, which is unusual as she's watched agility shows and competitions with us before. We think the frantic barking was too similar to the shelter for her. There was a small marquee selling treats and she cheered right up at the freebies and a new Kong toy!

Flyball - looks like good fun if your dog is ball-driven
It was a year ago last Friday that my in-laws lost Flash, and you can tell they are wanting another dog now. They have decided on getting their very first puppy together (having always adopted rescues) and are waiting on a little girl Hungarian Vizsla as their next companion. We'd all hoped she'd be born on my MILs birthday, but in true stubborn Vizsla style that never happened.

Duke
Today was a get up and go kind of day. We invited the rugs next door on the morning walk and were all pleased that Duke and Pickles were a bit calmer. Missy and Pickles were flushing rabbits from the gorse whilst Duke excitedly ran about with them - I'm fairly certain he had no idea what the game at hand was, but certainly made up for that with his enthusiasm. They all failed to spot a young roe deer with his antlers, and I wasn't quick enough on the mark to get a photo, but c'est la vie.

Pickles
Once we were all well walked we headed back in for some brunch and were dismayed as it started to snow. As you can see from the photos, though cold it was actually quite a pleasant morning - so we certainly timed that well. Once the weather broke we got in the car and headed home. Missy has been playing with her new Kong toy as we unpacked everything again and it looks like another walk and then a quiet evening. Well deserved, I think!

Kildrummy, Glenbuchat and Corgarff Castles

We were visiting the out-laws this week as a continuation of the birthdays (the hubby and I have our birthdays 6 days apart). It was just a quick visit up and down again due to other commitments, but it's always nice to go away where you don't feel obliged to get on with jobs. With storms hitting Northern Ireland, we had a nice lazy day where it really just rained and rained. Poor Missy fell into a puddle up to her neck and, after that, she was rather indignant about the whole being-out-in-the-rain malarkey and was quite happy roasting herself by the wood burning stove.
A very old Flash
Missy and her Uncle Flash get along very well, although it was quite upsetting to realise that, now 12, Flash is really starting to get quite old and isn't able to keep up anymore with her. Whilst he's been slowing down for some time, this is the first visit we've had were he's decided that he won't even try to follow her through the woods.
We had already decided that we may as well take advantage of the more northerly location and get a few of the castles in the Aberdeen area ticked off the list. Bearing in mind that Flash was struggling a bit now, we decided to keep the day simple and avoid anything with too much in the way of spiral staircases.

The first castle we managed was Kildrummy. Despite the rain of the previous day, the weather was glorious, and I suspect one of the last true days of summer we'll have this year. The sun and the warm weather appealed to both dogs as they explored the ruins quite happily. Described as the 'noblest of northern castles', I must confess, I would have loved to have seen this castle standing. As it is, it's a complete ruin - parts of the towers remain, but there's no stairs remaining and it offers only hints of its once grand past. My favourite part of the castle was the tower remains, although watching both dogs peer down the towers latrine was a good comedy moment!

Next on the hit-list was Corgarff Castle which is a bit of a misnomer! This one was a pleasant surprise for us as it is a completely intact medieval tower house and was used by both Jacobites and redcoats. Most of the central belt revolves around Mary Queen of Scots, so it was really refreshing to see a different bit of Scottish history and warfare. We stopped for a terribly British picnic of tea and sandwiches before going inside to explore. Dogs weren't allowed inside this bizarre little building that stood bleakly on its own on the hillside, so we took turns walking them around the star shaped outer wall whilst the others went inside and explored the twisting allegiances this building held. One of the particuarly nice things about this building is that some of the rooms have been recreated, including the guards quarters and you can also choose your allegiance by means of dress up!

As a small hat trick, we managed to bag one last castle on the way back. Glenbuchat is currently closed because of renovation work, but we managed a small walk around the building. By this time both the dogs were tired and the weather had begun to turn, so we called it quits and went back for a well deserved cup of tea with both dogs snoring soundly away.

Just a short post today!
