Through the Stargate to February

We did it, we survived January - the longest, crappiest month of the year! The days are noticeably longer (I mean, still dark before 5pm, but I'm not chasing the sun on the dog walk now) and the weather is ripe for adventure.

This weekend Missy was joined by Maisie and my brother as we explored the Abandoned Fife Earth Project, Scottish Coal ran out of money before completion. If it looks similar to the Crawick Multiverse or Jupiter Artland, well, it should, it's the same artist! It's free to wander about and we clocked up 3 miles in our slow meanderings.

It was very windy (as an abandoned coal mine/quarry should be) so we were quickly chilled to the bone, but otherwise would probably have spent longer there. Missy was tuckered out by the time we got home, which is always nice to see.

I am a month down on my cross stitch journal, and as you can see February is already started. Lessons have been learned, I pivoted too hard on the small stitches, so January almost feels a bit gappy at points. I'm not precious about the segments touching, so the gaps at the edges will get filled in later.

But why is February snow leopard print, not all hearts and cutesy?

It has taken literal years, but I finally got the perfect snow leopard photo at the zoo when we went on Saturday, so of course I had to commemorate it!

I expect February to be a busier month, and we're now in adventure season, so I'll hopefully see you all again soon!

Hell(sing) Yeah!

It's been a busy run! Let's rewind the week a bit though - it's been a bit of a con crunch. Wigs were hastily styled at the weekend and the Harkonen was being assembled as late as Wednesday owing to waiting for parts to dry and set.

Thursday we were back at the roller skating, this time with my niece. It was a good laugh and a nice run into the weekend. I had my nephew arrive Friday and we did a last fit check before playing board games and watching Spirited Away.

Then came the con! Was it worth the hours of sewing? Fighting with the jigsaw puzzle of the Harkonen? The metres and metres and metres of red fabric?

Absolutely! We had an absolute blast - everyone was so nice, we had loads of folk asking us to pose for photos and it was just a generally amazing day. My nephew was absolutely overwhelmed by everything - the cosplay, all the stuff, the talks and the judging and by the end he was absolutely beat. Delighted, but beat!

Highlights include sharing cookies with the Mario crew, making friends with a very over excited Gambit and helping a young girl on the verge of a meltdown. We spotted her behind us as we waited on the competition results curled up with her fingers in her ears and offered her a cookie. She declined the cookie and had a fan girl moment on our characters so we did some photos and had her pose with my Harkonen (she was 5 foot if she was lucky, it was hilarious). And that seemed to help her immensely.

There are official photos yet to come (the photographer was absolutely superb and took time with everyone to get great photos), so I'm going to wait for those before the costumes go on Instagram!

Then today was a day for the dogs. It was P in the Park (insert fan girl screaming). We've missed this the last few years, so I was glad to catch it today.

My niece had arrived Saturday evening with Wee Ben and my brother had coordinated coming along too, so we were very excited for a fur-cousins meet up again. The weather promised to be fair so we all headed to Unleashed dog parks for abfun day.

It wasn't all just dog shows, there was demos (the super spaniels were absolutely brilliant), talks and have a go games for the dogs. The dock diving was fun to watch but none of our dogs would be game, so we didn't bother with it.

Missy placed first in the fancy dress - I whole heartedly approve of having a kid choose the winning dogs, there's absolutely no bias except that the dog is friendly and cute. The wee lad was utterly smitten with Missy's Viking costume and I could tell he was desperate to figure out how the helmet stayed on (ribbons my dear, nearly wrapped ribbons).

Of course all of them deserve first place in my opinion, hence the photo at the top. That's absolutely going to be getting printed and put on the wall.

Well, the human niece and nephew are off home and we have Maisie, my favourite furry niece for the night whilst my brother is at a gig. Maisie is asleep on the sofa and Missy is passed out beside her, so it's really no bother at all!

Until next week!

Armed Forces Day

It's hard to accept that we are half way through the year and that the schools have now broken up for thier holidays! Well, in Scotland at least.

It's been a busy run - work had me in Dundee on Wednesday and then an all employee Event in Murryfeild on Thursday. We had friends round Friday so by Saturday I wasn't sure if I had enough steam to push on with the weekend! However, I couldn't leave Maisie in the lurch, and so we trotted off to the Military Museum Scotland for the Bravehound Dog Show celebrating Armed Forces Day. Bravehound as a charity train dogs to help veterans with PTSD - a category my dad falls under, so I was more than happy to turn up and enter Missy into everything. My brother came along with Maisie and, to all our surprise, my older sister with my nephew and Wee Ben too.

My nephew wanted to organise plans for his upcoming birthday sleep over (he's very excited to dress up as Alucard from Hellsing) and I'm pleased to say that he is very happy with the plans of anime, the cosplay Con, more anime and board games. If only they were all this easy to look after!

Back to the show! I have been joking for a while now about my need to get more ribbons for Maisie (who has won one at the Dogwarts event) and Wee Ben (who hasn't won anything, ever.) Well, I think fate tried a little too hard - Missy placed 4th in Still game and 5th in Best Salute. Maisie placed 3rd in what is officially the best category ever - "my dog is the best dog ever but hasn't won a ribbon and I don't know why". And Wee Ben. He won 6 ribbonsranging from 3rd in Best Beard to 6th in Dog Judge Would Most Like To Take Home.

Talk about over achieving! We had a nice moment where we laughed and spoke about my sisters MIL who passed at the start of the year looking down in Wee Ben. And then we bumped into some of my dad's old army buddies (they're everywhere, I swear!) who could not belive how grown we where, seeing as I had barely cracked walking when they last saw me.

A good day with lots of banter.

So... Today was meant to be a solo adventure to the Jousting but after the week it's been, I gave up and stayed home and gave Missy all the  cuddles on the sofa whilst I finished the hand sewing on my costume for the cosplay convention. It was definitely the right choice, softened by the fact that I will be doing the Jousting at the end of July with a friend, so I'm not missingit this year.

Looking at the calander, it's busy season, so I'll keep you updated as and when I can! Enjoy the summer and I'll write soon.
